This
book chronicles the history of Sophie Lanneau, a Southern Baptist missionary from North
Carolina and Wei Ling Girls Academy, the mission school she created in Suzhou,
China. Li Li writes of the triumphs and difficulties faced as Lanneau and the
Chinese women she endeavored to help struggled to bridge the cultural and religious
barriers that separated them. In over forty years of missionary work Lanneau
witnessed such major historical events as the Chinese Republican Revolution, the
Nationalist Revolution, the Sino-Japanese War, the civil war and the Communist takeover.
Mission in Suzhou recounts the transformation of Chinese society and of its people
and explains why this dramatic shift in Chinese goals eventually proved incompatible with
Lanneau and Wei Ling Girls Academy. |
